SCU COVID19 Update – March 17 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The last two weeks have been somewhat chaotic and a little hectic because of all  the uncertainty. Today, a Shelter In Place order was announced for the Bay Area. This order affects the counties of: San Francisco, Marin, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, and the city of Berkeley. You can find the orders that effect Santa Clara County here (click on the link!).  This means that everything deemed non-essential will be shutdown in those areas. Grocery stores, banks, and gas stations will remain open. The order went  into effect this morning at midnight and runs through April 7th, 2020.

For our employers…we are still determining which groups will be labeled “essential support”. We do know that those with job titles such as Electricians, HVAC Mechanic, Maintenance Persons, etc. may be called during this time to report to emergency calls or who may be required to remain on campus.

We have a scheduled conversation with SCU Employee Labor Relations this morning to determine who will be “essential”.

Santa Clara University management has made the commitment to continue paying workers their wages at their current base rate through April 7, 2020. The commitment can be found on their website: https://www.scu.edu/kob/update-on-covid-19/.

Please keep checking your emails for more updates.
